What is a Freight Forwarder

Freight forwarders are intermediaries who acts on behalf of importers and exporters to move goods through the global supply chain. Freight forwarders do not carry out the shipments themselves, they offer different transport modes such as airfreight, sea/ocean freight, road transport and rail freight. Freight forwarders normally arrange commercial transportation for the cargo and assumes responsibility for consignments until they reach their destinations, depending on the Incoterms 2020.

Customs Formalities

Most international freight forwarders have additional expertise in preparing and processing customs documentation. However, customs authorities state that the company importing or exporting is responsible for ensuring that the freight forwarder has been given clear and accurate information. Customs authorities also state that the company importing or exporting must check the accuracy of customs clearance declarations made on their behalf. We work with our clients to ensure that accurate information is provided to the freight forwarder and that customs formalities are completed correctly.

Cargo Insurance

Many businesses are surprised to discover that the freight forwarder will restrict their liability for damage or loss whilst in their control. Many freight forwarders follow stringent financial limits set by their trade associations. Therefore, if the value of the consignment of goods is higher than the maximum amount the freight forwarder is liable for, it is wise to have marine cargo insurance in place.

Managing the Freight Forwarder Relationship

While freight forwarders handle shipments, it is important to understand that there is a requirement to provide shipping instructions and documentation to enable the movement of cargo. We will work with the freight forwarder and our client to plan for eventualities and set expectations. Our collaborative approach with the freight forwarder will avoid the expensive misunderstandings that occur due to ineffective onboarding. We take time to understand the client’s business objectives, operating procedures and their specific shipping requirements so that we can arrange the correct services with the freight forwarder. The goal is to move the goods from A to B within an agreed timeframe and at an agreed price.

"Our communicative and collaborative relationship with our clients and freight forwarders are key to our success."

Airfreight

What is Airfreight?

Airfreight or air cargo is the movement of goods via a chartered or scheduled air carrier. Airfreight is the most expensive way to ship, with shipping costs being based on the chargeable volumetric weight of the cargo. Airfreight is ideal for shipping smaller, higher value goods that need urgent transportation. Most shipments by air go through a higher level of security than other modes of transportation, which makes it one of the most secure ways to ship goods between countries. However, there are limitations on the movement of hazardous materials by airfreight.

Air Cargo Solutions

While airfreight is a premium and potentially costly service, it’s often the only option for product required urgently. We can offer a comprehensive range of international air cargo solutions that will fit your individual cargo needs with high-level visibility. Working with clients, we design more effective airfreight services to meet service environments, dynamic production needs and end customer challenges. With our help, you can optimise your supply chain solutions for best routing, helping you save money with solutions that focus on delivery speed with constant communication and flexibility.

Sea Freight

What is Sea Freight?

Sea freight or ocean freight is the most common form of transport used by importers and exporters and accounts for approximately 90% of goods transported globally. The popularity of sea freight is due to its low cost and ability to handle large volumes that airfreight cannot accommodate. In addition, there are fewer restrictions on the type of goods that can be transported when compared with airfreight. The main categories of cargo shipped via sea freight are dry bulk, liquid bulk, and container cargo. Many importers and exporter ship their goods packed within standard 20’ or 40’ sea containers. However, there are more than 20 internationally recognised types of containers used within the shipping industry.

Sea Freight Solutions

We help clients find ocean solutions that are customised to meet their unique requirements. We provide third-party solutions with excellent Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers (NVOCC) or direct with Shipping Lines that cover different sea container types, as well as consolidation services with reliable sailings to ensure your cargo reaches the right place, at the right time and in the most cost-effective way. We can provide innovative solutions which utilise consolidation services and Full Container Loads (FCL) to minimise costs. If your business does not have sufficient cargo to fill a full sea container, we can provide console services, which will consolidate your cargo with goods from other shippers within the same sea container. This is known as a Less than Container Load (LCL) solution.

International Road Freight

What is International Road Freight?

International road freight is the movement of cargo by road between two places in two different countries. International road transport can be the best option for moving goods within the European Union and between the European Union and United Kingdom. Importers and exporters can use road freight services to move part loads and full loads through international borders with the correct shipping documentation. International road freight remains a very cost-efficient way of transporting cargo. Road freight can be used in combination with both airfreight and sea freight to facilitate door to door delivery, if required.

International Road Freight Solutions

We help clients find road freight solutions to meet their business needs. We can improve the performance of our client’s current freight provider, optimise the costs, provide transparency and address their freight challenges. Our focus is to make our client’s international freight forwarding as cost effective and efficient as possible. This includes helping them to produce the appropriate customs compliant documentation to enable import or export. We help our clients decide how they’re going to deliver freight on time to the right destination, and at the lowest cost possible.

Multimodal Solutions

What is Multimodal Transport?

Multimodal transport is a type of freight services, which involves the use of more than one mode of transportation to transport goods through international borders. The process utilises a combination of two or more means of transport, such as sea and air freight. Multimodal transport involves the seamless transfer of cargo between different transportation modes to optimise efficiency, improve cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.

Multimodal Solutions

By utilising multimodal solutions, our clients can combine sea and air services to obtain the advantages of both. The transit times for multimodal services fall between the normal air and ocean shipments on the same lane but give a transit of up to 50 percent better than an ocean shipment. Combining your air cargo and ocean freight solutions can help you find the right balance between cost and time, adding flexibility to your supply chain while also reducing your costs compared with a standard airfreight shipment.

On arrival at the port, sea containers can move by rail to a railhead near to the end destination and then containers can move the final few miles by truck. This reduces the costs against road trucking from the port to the end destination.
